April Housing for All Caucus Featured Staggering Condo Conversion Report

With the passage of the Affordable Homes Act, two- and three-family buildings are now captured within the condo conversion law. This update adds more than three times as many buildings, and nearly doubles the number of units, covered by the original 1983 law. This update has resulted in 124,400 two- and three-family buildings (287,200 homes) across Massachusetts in which tenants are now able to access protections against eviction and displacement in the event of condominium conversion. Now the total number of buildings where tenants are now able to access these protections has risen to 169,000. Covered units have increased to about 721,000 units, equal to half of all multifamily housing units in Massachusetts.

This was the topic of April's Housing for All caucus. After opening remarks by caucus co-chairs Representative Connolly and Senator Edwards, Georgia Barlow, Government Affairs Specialist, Zoe Iacovino, Regional Planning Data Analyst, and
Alexis Smith, Principal Regional Housing and Land Use Planner, (all from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council) presented on their recent report. Approximately 45 legislative offices were in attendance and were joined by housing officials from Somerville, Cambridge, Boston, Revere, and Nantucket. The recording of the presentation can be viewed here.
